Airport security checks, from digging out liquids to unpacking electronics, have long been a hassle for travellers. But changes are on the way that could make the process quicker and easier.
With new CT scanner technology being introduced at several UK airports, hand luggage rules are finally being relaxed, meaning your next trip through security could be quicker and smoother. Here’s what you need to know…

You’ll now be able to breeze through airport security.
What’s changing?
New 3D CT scanners are being introduced at UK airports. These scanners produce detailed images of hand luggage, allowing security staff to inspect bags without requiring passengers to unpack items.
What this means for you:
- Liquids can stay in your bag – there’s no longer a need to place them in a separate clear plastic bag at security.
- Electronics stay packed – laptops, tablets, cameras, and other devices no longer need to be removed.
However, the 100ml liquid limit still applies. Items like makeup, hand cream, toothpaste, yoghurts, and soft cheeses must remain within this size restriction.
Which UK airports have the new scanners?
The following airports have implemented the new technology and updated their hand luggage rules:
- Belfast International
- Birmingham
- Bristol
- Edinburgh
- London Gatwick (from April 7)
- Leeds Bradford
- Luton
- Newcastle
- Southend
- Teesside
More airports are expected to introduce the scanners soon. However, not all have made the switch yet, and some international airports may still follow older rules. It’s a good idea to pack a clear plastic bag just in case. Check out our airport liquid guide for tips for getting your liquids through airport security whilst travelling with a carry-on bag, for airports still following the classic security rules.

With these new rules, you’ll be on the plane and at your destination in no time.
Planning ahead
These updates aim to speed up the security process and make travel a little easier. If you’re flying soon, check your departure airport’s website for the most up-to-date information.
