Work and Study
Our unique package provides opportunities for language students to study intensive lessons abroad whilst taking on a short-term work experience at one of our varied work placements. Working with our partner language schools across Europe, we provide a package tailored to suit your needs; study, work placement, accommodation, transport, transfers, insurance.
Work and Study packages are available for students studying at A Level or equivalent or higher. It is also suitable for Gap Year students and for university students or adults looking to improve their languages skills, even if it has been some time since they last studied languages formally.
Work placements are available from a range of business categories. Students state their preferences as part of their application and our Placement Coordinators match students to the available placements. Work and Study work placements take place in the afternoons / early evening depending on the sector.
The Work and Study programme runs every Monday to Friday throughout the year. Accommodation is available from Sunday to Saturday. Students can travel for a week, two weeks or longer. We are able to tailor packages to suit your requirements and the time you have available.
Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany and well known for its many interesting sights, such as the harbour and the Elbphilharmonie. Our German language school in Hamburg is located in the Esplanadebau, a historic Art Deco office building right in the city centre. From here you are only a few steps from the Alster River and the Jungfernstieg promenade.
The modern, well-equipped school is designed to give students the very best environment within which to work. With 15 classrooms, study centre, multi media room, internet cafe, student lounge and spacious terrace you will be extremely well catered for in the heart of the city.
You will be given a written assessment before you travel and a speaking assessment on the first morning before lessons in order to place you in the group most suited to your ability level. Classes have an international flavour and a lively feel because they are grouped by ability not nationality or age.
Optional Social and Cultural Programme
The school offers a range of social and cultural activities including: gallery visits, boat trips along the River Spree, seminars, guided nights out and full day excursions on Saturdays.
For students wanting to completely immerse themselves in the German language and culture we recommend that you stay with one of our carefully selected German host families. They will not only introduce you to the German way of life and help you practise the German language but will also give you a taste of local and delicious regional specialities. The host families are situated within the Berlin area within good reach of the school by foot or U-bahn / S-bahn (underground/train).
Host Family accommodation includes half-board catering (breakfast & evening meal) from the Sunday before your course starts to the Saturday after it finishes.
Subject to availability, an extra day on one side of your trip may be available on request to facilitate flight dates. A surcharge is payable for any extra nights.
You can read more about what it means to stay with a host family in our Host Family Guide.
* Please note that unlike in France and Spain where families are vetted using the local equivalents of the UK DBS check, in Germany hosts are not required to undertake a police check. Hosts are stringently vetted by the accommodation officer attached to the language school and students' reviews of hosts are used to inform the suitability of hosts for future use.
Please note residence accommodation is only available for students over 17 years old.
The school has a range of beautifully appointed single and twin, self-catering apartments situated on the school campus. Apartments include a fully equipped kitchen, private bathroom, TV, phone, WiFi, bedsheets and towels. The facilities are ideally located for access to the school and local facilities, including cafés, restaurants, bars and shops.
The school is easily accessible via Hamburg’s excellent transport system and we are happy to provide details on request. We can also arrange private transfers for you from Hamburg airports or train stations for a supplement.
The school in Hamburg is closed on 07/04/23, 10/04/23, 01/05/23, 18/05/23, 29/05/23, 03/10/23 and 31/10/23.
