Five Tips for a Smooth Airport Check-In

Many of us find flying stressful, and sometimes navigating the airport can be even more stressful than the flight itself. But good organisation, preparation, and planning can make all the difference in starting your trip on the right foot. Here are five tips that could make all the difference…

Don’t let the check-in leave you feeling confused.

1. Pack smart

Before you arrive at the airport, think ahead and pack strategically to avoid fumbling through your bag in front of a long queue.

Hand Luggage
  • A suitable bag, such as this one, with sections to organise your packing. Make sure to check your airline’s size restrictions – you don’t want to be faced with a hefty fine!
  • Keep your hand luggage to a minimum – fewer items make it easier to find what you need quickly.
  • Have a separate pouch or folder for documents, such as your passport and boarding passes, so they are easy to access.
  • Make sure all your liquids are in containers below 100ml and pre-packed in a clear plastic bag. Although some airports have upgraded security systems and the clear bag is not required, having all bottles packed together keeps your bag organised and reduces any accidental spills.
Hold Luggage
  • If possible, check your luggage weight before you travel. If you are travelling with others, most airlines allow bag pooling, which means you can combine your total checked baggage allowance across multiple bags.
  • Make sure you have no prohibited items, such as lithium batteries like portable chargers, flammable liquids, compressed gases, etc.

2. Travel in Comfort

Travelling in comfort is best for flights, but it is also beneficial for saving time and effort at the airport. Wear loose, comfortable clothes, and limit the number of layers and metal accessories, including belts, jewellery and heavy shoes. These are often asked to be removed or can be flagged up in the scanners.

3. Arrive on time

Most airlines recommend arriving at the airport at least 2 hours before a short-haul flight and 3 hours before a long-haul flight. However, you should give yourself some leeway in case of any travel disruptions or obstacles. Check your route to the airport, and if the airport has multiple terminals, check the terminal your flight is flying from before you arrive. You can also save time by checking in online, which is usually a requirement by airlines now.

4. Checking in

Online check-in for flights is usually open 24 hours, and it is recommended to use the airline’s app, so your boarding pass is easily accessible – make sure your phone has enough charge! Many airline apps will also provide information on check-in times, gates and flight updates.

5. Security

Be vigilant; there are usually signs as well as security staff telling travellers what they need to put in the trays. Since some airports have advanced security systems, travellers can now keep electronic devices, liquids, etc, in their bags.
