Advice for future travellers: making the most of Work Experience Abroad
Completing work experience abroad is a fantastic opportunity to explore a new culture, make new friends, and develop both language and workplace skills. If this is your first time travelling abroad or completing work experience, here’s our top tips to make the most of your experience!
Adopt the right mindset
Be proactive
Don’t wait to be told what to do, take initiative; ask for tasks and keep busy. Ask customers and colleagues to only speak in the target language, so you can practise your language skills.
Be open-minded
Embrace the unknown as every placement brings new and different experiences. Approach each day with a positive attitude, and don’t be afraid to try new things. Make conversation with other staff members – don’t worry, they will be friendly and helpful!
Be confident
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes as these are just part of the learning process. Ask questions and step outside your comfort zone. Enjoy the journey, and remember that confidence is key.
Be patient
Adapting to a new environment takes time and mental preparation. Be patient with yourself, and you will learn more and more throughout the week.
Build relationships
Engage with colleagues
Take every chance to engage with your coworkers. Speak as much of the target language with them as possible and listen carefully to pick up new phrases and colloquialisms. This will not only boost your language skills but also strengthen professional connections and your ability to network.
Interact with customers
Don’t be shy to speak with customers; it’s a great way to practice and improve. Embrace every interaction as it’s a chance to practise your language and boost your confidence.
Ask questions
Always ask questions to learn more about the job, the culture, and the language. Make sure to talk to everyone! You’ll only get half the experience if you don’t.
Social interaction
The people you meet during your placement can make the experience unforgettable. Strike up conversations with both staff and customers; you’ll learn faster, gain confidence, and make friends along the way!
Practical tips for a smooth experience
Prepare physically
Long days can be tiring and you may need to do physical tasks during your placement. Make sure you rest well and wear comfortable shoes. Trainers are ideal for most placements (sports trainers, not Nikes).
Learn relevant vocabulary
Familiarise yourself with key vocabulary and phrases for your role before you start your placement. Being prepared will make tasks easier and interactions smoother.
Handling specific situations
Handling downtime
Make the most of every moment. Quiet periods are perfect for chatting with staff and colleagues to practise your language skills. Ask and answer questions, and use the time to learn.
Dealing with challenges
You might encounter language barriers or tricky situations. Stay positive, speak as much as possible in the target language, and don’t be afraid to ask people to repeat themselves. Most people are happy to help.
Looking after your well-being
Take care of yourself
Sleep well, eat properly, and stay hydrated to maintain your energy levels. Being punctual and prepared will help you enjoy the experience to the fullest.
